Some days I despair about my profession

Some days I despair about my profession. It’s been around about half a century – yes, I know about computers before that, in fact had classes on computer architecture from one of ENIAC’s builders, still as a reasonably recognized and viable profession half a century is close enough – and this is blog worthy?

This stuff has been discovered, known, passed on, discussed, written about, taught, and on, and on, and on, throughout all of this half century we’ve been at it, and yet it still hasn’t made it into mode of thought for the profession, let alone be considered common sense. Lip service is paid to it, in many cases and places, it is preached fervently, but it is so far too rarely put into practice. Why?
