Spring is home, there was no penetration of the muscle wall or body cavity, and she will recover fully!
Spring came successfully through her surgery and out of anesthesia. Spring is now home. Her left flank from mid rib cage to her hind leg shaved top to bottom. There was more damage than it seemed: a longer track and a fluid pocket had formed and the top of the muscle layer had gone necrotic. There should be no lasting damage and only a cool scar, appropriate for the lady she is.
She has a top to bottom drain, about 7″, and is stitched up. She’s still very woozy, the very picture of “this is your Doberman Pinscher on drugs” and shortly we’ll see if she’ll hold down some kibble. If so, after an hour, she’ll get the rest and we can start her antibiotics and anti-inflammatory. If all goes well, the drain comes out Monday, and the stitches in two weeks. She’ll have to take it easy – no romping, no racing up and down the steep hill that’s our back yard, no fighting, no off leash dog park – for two weeks. She’ll drive us crazy after the drugs wear off.
I am very happy.
